Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18, 2000) was an American singer and actress with a career that spanned over 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her powerful, sultry contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 until 1969. The album she released as her debut "Cry Me a River" was recorded by her was inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for 1974 for her performance in Emergency as Nurse Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began acting as an actress as she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career started on film in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in many westerns, co-starring with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) along with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as together with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and together with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the late 1950s, she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional musical career. Her last studio album was released in the year 1969. She maintained her popularity as the female lead in the role of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979), she starred alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
